Future Laptop Could be Charged by Typing

Australian researchers have figured out a way to harness the energy we use while typing to power a laptop. Using piezoelectricity, this method works in a similar way to cigarette lighters that create a spark by striking a piezoelectric crystal.

To power a laptop, though, a much thinner film of the piezoelectric material would have to be developed using nanotechnology. It’s so thin, it can be coated onto various electronic parts and integrated into a variety of gadgetry.

“The power of piezoelectrics could be integrated into running shoes to charge mobile phones, enable laptops to be powered through typing or even used to convert blood pressure into a power source for pacemakers — essentially creating an everlasting battery,” Dr. Madhu Bhaskaran, the study’s co-author, told GizMag.

The idea of an everlasting battery is mind-bLinkoggling. Scientists are also looking into ways to power touchscreen devices with piezoelectric film, putting all that energetic finger-swiping to good use.

Could this be a way around that perennial battery power conundrum?

Engineering now open for B.Sc. graduates

Science graduates can now enhance their graduation degrees by taking up engineering courses.

B.Sc. graduates with 60% aggregate in mathematics will be able to take admission into second year or the third semester of engineering i.e. B.E. / B.Tech course.

The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has recently notified this new regulation for admission into engineering. So far only the students with an engineering diploma could join engineering colleges for completing the degree course.

The criteria for giving admissions would solely be based on an entrance test on the basis of merit ranking.

The step was taken so as to provide a better and good job opportunity for the science graduates. The senior academic V.C.Kulandi Swamy said that there are engineering colleges like Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) that have a three year B.Tech course for science graduates. So the AICTE should have done something to have a look at this programme as this was in demand among the students.

The Indian Air Force was officially established on 8 October 1932. The Motto of Indian Air Force has been taken from eleventh chapter of the Gita, the Discourse given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra during the Great War of Mahabharata. The Lord is showing His Supreme Divine form to Arjuna and the great form of the Lord is reaching the sky with glory, evoking fear and loss of self-control in the mind of Arjuna. The Indian Air Force, similarly, aims to overwhelm the adversaries with application of aerospace power in defence of the nation.

The Crests in the Indian Air Force comprises of a standard frame. The central portion of the frame contains the individual formation sign with a motto shown in the scroll at the foot of the frame. The unit sign is drawn inside a circle of 3 inches diameter. The name of the formation of the units is shown in the upper half of the circle while Bhartiya Vayu Sena inscribed if the lower half. The crest anf the motto are designed based on the role of the formation.

All Indian Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)

Bengaluru, along with 21 other cities in the country, has been selected to host the first-ever online All Indian Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) which will be held for 24 days between May 7 and 24, 2012. According to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) officials, students from the city will not be given the option of an offline examination i.e. paper/pen test. In Hubli and Mangalore, however, CBSE will hold an offline test only.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a senior officer of the CBSE said that the Board would soon start negotiations with major educational institutes in the city over hosting the exam. “Over the last two years the CAT online exam has been conducted successfully in the city. The Board is also planning to hold exams in a couple of colleges. Compared to the CAT, a greater number of students appear for the AIEEE in the city, every year,” he said.

“One of the reasons we selected Bengaluru to host the online exam is students in this region are more tech-savvy and familiar with online exam modules,” he said. To encourage more students to take up the online examination, CBSE has decided to charge them half the examination fee. “For other students the exam fee will be Rs 300, while for those students who appear for online exams it will be Rs 150,” he added. According to the proposal, CBSE will upload a mock-test software on its website in December to be used as practice by candidates. CBSE also decided not to accept offline applications from this year onward. Exam fees can be paid through debit or credit card.

Teacher Eligibility Test for all school teachers in India

Qualifying in a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is now mandatory for all existing and aspiring primary and middle school teachers in the country, with the passing of the Right To Education Act. The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) has published the guidelines for conducting the TET, providing complete details about rationale for the test, eligibility to take the test, the structure and syllabus for the test, the type of questions that would be asked and the marks required to qualify as a teacher.

To be eligible to take the CTET or any other TET conducted by the states, one has to have a degree in education (B.Ed or D. Ed) or be on the verge of completing a degree in the year of taking the test. Teachers will need to take the TET within a period of 5 years from the time the TET is first notified. This kind of a qualifying test can help improve the quality of teachers right from the recruitment stage.

The Central Government and many States have begun conducting the TET. The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) was conducted by the CBSE for the first time in June 2011. The next CTET will be held on January 29, 2012. Here's how the CTET web site describes the Test.

It had been inter alia provided that one of the essential qualifications for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in any of the schools referred to in clause (n) of section 2 of the Right To Education Act is that he/ she should pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) which will be conducted by the appropriate Government in accordance with the Guidelines framed by the NCTE.

The rationale for including the TET as a minimum qualification for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher is as under:

It would bring national standards and benchmark of teacher quality in the recruitment process.
It would induce teacher education institutions and students from these institutions to further improve their performance standards.
It would send a positive signal to all stakeholders that the Government lays special emphasis on teacher quality.

The aggregate results of CTET 2011 are available thanks to a question raised in the Lok Sabha by the MP, Priya Sunil Dutt. Two papers were held as part of CTET 2011, one for those who wish to become a teacher in classes I to V and another for those who wish to become a teacher in classes VI to VIII.

According to the aggregate data provided by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, D. Purandeswari, less than 10% of those who took the tests were able to qualify. There is no indication of how many of those who qualified were existing teachers.

Priya Sunil Dutt, in her question, had also asked whether, to protect the interests of SC & ST candidates, the Government proposes to prescribe lower marks/ qualifying standard in future and retrospectively to CTET 2011. The Minister, D. Purandeswari, responded saying,

The CBSE has issued certificates and statements of marks to candidates of all categories securing marks 60% and above. Appointing authorities can consider giving concessions to persons belonging to SC/ST/OBC/differently abled category in accordance with respective reservation policies.

It would be good if the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) and the respective State Councils of Teacher Education publish a list on their web sites of all teachers who have qualified in the TET conducted by them, just as the Medical Council of India, publishes a list of all qualified doctors. This would also help students wanting to do a B.Ed or D.Ed in selecting those teacher training colleges that do a good job in training teachers to qualify. The teacher training colleges could also be asked to publish on their web sites the percentage of their students who have qualified in the TETs.

The Tamil Nadu Government notified the Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test recently and put out a Government Order based on the NCTE guidelines. There are a few points that I am still unsure about after reading the Tamil Nadu Government Order.

The G.O. says "The teachers working in unaided private schools are required to pass Teacher Eligibility Test within 5 years." I presume all teachers currently working in Government schools or Government-aided schools will also need to pass the test within 5 years, but am not sure about it. The G.O. states that teachers can be recruited henceforth only if they have qualified in the TET.
The G.O. says "The Validity Period of the TET qualifying certificate for appointment will be decided by the appropriate Government subject to a maximum of seven years for all categories." Does this mean that every Teacher will have take the test again after seven years?
Since the RTE Act only applies to children of 6-14 years of age, are high school and higher secondary school teachers exempt from taking the TET? If so, the NCTE could come up with guidelines for another similar TET for teachers teaching classes IX - XII.

Show Your Work!

One of the things I enjoyed most about DevLearn last month was getting to see other instructional designers’ work, and just judging by the size of audiences that turn out for DemoFest and the ID Challenge, I know I’m not alone. It’s a common complaint among e-learning designers that they don’t get to see each other’s work often enough, because their companies (or their clients) won’t allow their courses to be posted online or included in portfolios. And it’s understandable why. Either the company is concerned about sharing proprietary content, about sharing training methods that are considered a competitive advantage, or, in the case of courses being sold to the public, giving away too much of the product.

But I’m writing today to convince those of you in the position to make such decisions that you should let instructional designers — whether vendors or internal employees — show as much of their work as possible. Not just because we want you to — and of course we do — but because there are benefits to the industry as a whole and your company specifically.

It promotes better work in the industry. Our industry has a lot of accidental instructional designers, and they love to learn by looking at stuff that has already been done. When we teach our e-learning development courses, our students ALWAYS ask where they can go to see additional samples of a certain technique or authoring tool. The more instructional designers are able to share ideas, high-quality examples, and innovations, the more we can push ourselves and each other forward. And that’s good for you.

It helps you figure out what you want. When instructional designers pitch ideas to clients, we often do prototypes to communicate our ideas, because e-learning is just hard to describe. But having a wide variety of online samples from a number of sources can be another — sometimes easier — way to get on the same page about what you want. And it makes you a more informed consumer, as well, of what’s available in the marketplace. If no one is willing to share samples, it is difficult to gain this perspective. But if everyone shared just a little bit, we would all benefit.

It showcases the quality of work your company does. Even though different instructional designers or firms can produce wildly different work, you and the other stakeholders in your company play a key role in the finished product. Showing quality work is a good bit of PR for you — even if a vendor did most of the heavy lifting.

How can you showcase your work?

There are a number of ways you can showcase your work in a way that you and your company can get positive exposure while others in the industry can learn from your example. You can either do these things yourself or grant permission for the designers/contractors/vendors to do so.

  • Submit your course for industry awards and showcases, such as E-Learning Guild’s DemoFest, the Articulate Guru awards, ASTD’s BEST, and Brandon Hall’s Excellence in E-Learning Awards.

  • Put a link to some of your less-proprietary courses on a public-facing website.

  • Post links to content in various e-learning communities, such as the Articulate Community Showcase.

  • Present your courses as a case study at local and national conferences.

If the thought of allowing whole courses to be posted online still doesn’t work for you, you can use one of these partial solutions:

  • Publish only part of the course; shut down any navigation to other sections.

  • Create a screencast showing only part of the course. This can be even more beneficial to both the person highlighting the skills and the person looking for skills, because the screencast can be a guided tour showcasing features of the course that the audience might not otherwise notice as well as the design rationale behind those features.

  • Share only screenshots of the course. While this is my least preferred method because it doesn’t give as good of a feel for the overall experience, it can at least do a good job of showcasing good graphic design.

  • Publish the course with identifying company information and any confidential information removed or replaced.

  • If the course is retail, use any of the above methods and see how you can combine it with marketing efforts. For example, if you grant your vendor permission to create a screencast highlighting your course, include an agreement that the screencast will have a link to where the course can be purchased.
